Sustainable Living in the UAE: Initiatives Shaping a Greener Tomorrow

Global challenges, such as climate change, pollution, and biodiversity loss are hard truths to embrace. The UAE has captivated the world through its architecture, ever-evolving cityscape, and cosmopolitan nature. In addition, the country has set forward effective policymaking and sustainability initiatives to combat global challenges.

According to an article by the Khlaeej Times, experts project the global population will reach 8.6 billion by 2030 and 9.8 billion by 2050. Analysts expect the population in the UAE to grow by 4%, reaching over 10 million by the year 2030. As a result, the demand for housing continues to grow.

Ongoing Initiatives:

In 2023, officials named the year the Year of Sustainability in the UAE. They set examples through the National Net Zero by 2050 initiative. This plan aims to introduce more advanced sustainability standards that focus on reducing the carbon footprint. Dubai also hosted the COP28 in November of last year. The event outlined global efforts to reduce emissions and transition away from fossil fuels.

The UAE also ranks high for buildings that the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) accredits. According to a report by CBRE, as of Q3 2023, LEED-certified assets in Abu Dhabi and Dubai achieved an average premium of 33.0% and 34.3%, respectively, compared to non-LEED-certified assets.

Dubai

The “My Sustainable Living” program is one of a kind in the Middle East. It aims to enhance the efficiency of water and electricity consumption by residents. The program regularly checks, compares, and monitors their consumption. It aligns with the Demand Side Management Strategy 2030 and the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050.

Abu Dhabi

Masdar City represents the city of tomorrow as a groundbreaking sustainable urban community. Builders construct 90% of the buildings with low-carbon cement and use 90% recycled aluminum. Buildings in Masdar City use 40% less energy and water compared to other buildings.

Abu Dhabi Urban Planning Council developed The Estidama Pearl Rating System. This system is considered one of the most well-known green building certification systems in the UAE.

Future Outlook:

Most property developers now focus on sustainable approaches. They aim to incorporate sustainable designs. Developers identify ways to meet emission reduction targets and use efficient fixtures to conserve water and energy.

Overall, sustainability regulations play a pivotal role in shaping the construction and real estate industry in the UAE. They drive positive change towards a more environmentally conscious future: a greener tomorrow.
