From Crop to Cup is an inspiring story of love and passion for coffee. The story takes place in Bali, the Island of the Gods. Bali is home to stunning landscapes, lush greenery, pristine beaches as well as enriched coffee. Bali’s coffee experience goes beyond flavor, offering a culturally enriched journey where every sip reflects the island’s traditions and history. In this article, we dive into the history and rise of Bali Beans Coffee & Co.
The Story:
The journey begins in the 70s with Nyoman Sudana, an adventurous traveler born into a family of rice farmers. Since his youth, Nyoman set his sights on displaying the best of Bali to the world. He worked with a Dutch Businessman to travel across Indonesia to source prime cows for exportation.
One night, in the 70s, Nyoman stayed up late to oversee shipping operations to Hong Kong. His boss handed him a cup of coffee to stay awake. However, little did he know that this was just the start of creating the world-renowned Bali Beans Coffee.
Seeing his enjoyment of coffee, his boss regularly gave him cups made from exotic beans collected during his travels. Fascinated by the intense flavors and diverse varieties, Nyoman’s interest in coffee grew. He realized he had found his true passion.
Armed with his newfound coffee knowledge, Nyoman dreamed of producing organic coffee in Bali’s rich soil and sharing it globally. However, he needed more than passion to convince his parents to turn their rice fields into coffee plantations— he needed, and indeed found, love.

Romance through Coffee: Wayan & Nyoman
Wayan Sari started her career as a Jewelry Saleswoman. Her career involved her traveling across Bali, in which she stopped by Lawak Village, where she met the Sudana family. As she arrived, she was greeted by Nyoman, who did not hesitate to hand her a cup of coffee made from beans collected from his travels. The joy they shared while sipping coffee made Nyoman invite her to another cup of coffee the following day.

The love between Wayan and Nyoman continued to ignite. As the couple shared more cups of coffee, they ended up falling in love deeply. Soon enough, Nyoman proposed and Wayan moved into his village. The couple quickly recognized the potential of coffee and the opportunities that their rice fields presented. The rice fields were equipped with volcanic soil of the Kintamani Highlands, presenting the perfect atmosphere to produce premium Balinese Coffee.
Journey driven by Passion
The couple planted their first coffee trees in 1981, which took 4 years to harvest. In 1985, the family had a double celebration. They celebrated their first harvest, as well as the birth of their daughter, Ayu Sudana. Since then, the family never looked back. With continuous plantation, harvest and Wayan’s sales experience, coffee-farming standards heightened in the region, making Kintamani Highlands the crown jewel of Bali.
The Rise of Ayu Sudana
Since a young age, Ayu’s life revolved around coffee. Inspired by her parents, Ayu would always visit the coffee plantation after school to help and learn from them. Being the playful, adventurous child she was, she would go early on weekends as well to collect more beans. More beans = more pocket money for herself!
As Ayu grew up, she was experienced enough to supervise the plantations. She spent more time with Bali Beans workers and farmers and learned from their wisdom. The values she currently holds stem from her father’s passion for travel and mother’s advocacy for environmental conservation.
Ayu Sudana is currently the Co-Founder and Managing Partner for Bali Beans & Co, driven by the passion to offer premium Balinese coffee around the world, in the most sustainable ways possible.
