UAE’s Initiatives for a Thriving Family-Friendly Future

“Family in a national priority”, quotes HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, prime minister and ruler of Dubai. The UAE has undergone a remarkable transformation in recent years, evolving into a family-friendly destination that caters to the needs of residents and visitors alike. Following his announcement of the establishment of the Ministry Of Family back on Sunday, and with a strong emphasis on community well-being and a commitment to providing a high quality of life, the UAE continues to implement a range of initiatives to support families and create a nurturing environment for children.

Child-Friendly Initiatives

The UAE has embraced the Child-Friendly Cities Initiative (CFCI), with Sharjah and Abu Dhabi leading the way, notably through Sharjah Child Friendly City. These cities have implemented various programs and policies aimed at promoting the well-being of children, including:

  • Child-Friendly Urban Planning: Creating safe and inclusive spaces for children to play, learn, and grow. The Sharjah Child Friendly City (SCFC) has launched this initiative back in 2017 by partnering with the Sharjah Urban Planning Council, UNICEF, and UN Habitat. In 2018, Sharjah became the first city in the world to receive the “child friendly city” title.
  • Early Childhood Education: Investing in high-quality early childhood education programs to provide a strong foundation for children’s development. In October, the ECD Research Convening brought together over 90 researchers from the UAE, the Arab region, and Africa to foster collaboration and innovation in early childhood development (ECD), address challenges and explore opportunities for advancing a more inclusive and representative science in the field.
  • Child Protection: The UAE recognizes the importance of familial foundations and, therefore, implementing robust child protection measures to ensure the safety and well-being of children. The 2018 National Family Policy exemplifies the UAE’s commitment to promoting household happiness and unity.
  • Family Support: Offering a range of  support services, such as counseling, parenting workshops, and childcare facilities. The Social Welfare Program is also an important aspect, encompassing a wide range of beneficiaries, including widows, divorced women, people of determination, orphans, children without known parents, low-income individuals, and various other groups.

Parent-Friendly Environments

The Parent-Friendly Label™ (PFL) is a voluntary, UNICEF Gulf-backed workplace award program implemented across the UAE. It enables organizations in the semi-governmental, private, and third sectors to earn recognition for fostering a supportive work culture and implementing policies that positively impact children aged 0-8. Numerous organizations throughout the UAE have already embraced this initiative, benefiting over 148,000 employees and more than 50,000 children so far.

In Education, “Family First” initiative was launched by HH Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, minister of Tolerance, at the GEMS World Academy Dubai earlier this year. This initiative for change inspires GEMS families to spend more quality time together, explore new experiences, and unlock the untapped wisdom and knowledge within their households that often go unnoticed.

In 2024, planned activations include a comprehensive survey on household values, monthly TED Talk-style discussions led by global experts and advocates on various aspects of family support, and a year-end gala celebrating stories that embody the principles of this project.

Family-Friendly Communities

The UAE’s vibrant communities offer a wide range of amenities and activities for families. From world-class schools and healthcare facilities to recreational parks and cultural attractions, there is something for everyone. Many communities also have dedicated events and festivals throughout the year, fostering a sense of belonging and togetherness.
